BONUS EPISODE: Diane Shader Smith On Her Daughter Mallory’s Incredible Memoir About Living With Cystic Fibrosis, Salt in My Soul, and The Athleticism & Mindset That Powered Her Along The Way

Mallory Smith lived with Cystic Fibrosis until the age of 25.  She had a passion and talent for writing and the smart sense to keep a journal and document her life from the young age of nine.  Salt in My Soul: An Unfinished Memoir is her story. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of three, Mallory Smith grew up to be a determined, talented young woman who inspired others even as she privately raged against her illness. Despite the daily challenges of endless medical treatments and a deep understanding that she’d never lead a normal life, Mallory was determined to “live happy,” a mantra she followed until her death. Mallory worked hard to make the most out of the limited time she had, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, becoming a cystic fibrosis advocate well-known in the CF community, and embarking on a career as a professional writer. Along the way, she cultivated countless intimate friendships and ultimately found love.

On this episode, Host Marni Salup is joined by Co- Host Lori Mazor as they sync up with Mallory’s Mother, Diane Shader Smith, to discuss the incredible story of Mallory’s life despite her struggle with cystic fibrosis and a rare superbug, her passion and determination for living, how surfing, volleyball and swimming powered her through many hard times, and why Mallory left instructions for Diane to publish her work posthumously.

Salt in My Soul is an inspiring portrait of a brave young woman who did not allow herself to be defined by disease. Her words offer comfort and hope to readers, even as she herself was facing death. Salt in My Soul is a beautifully crafted, intimate, and poignant tribute to a short life well lived—and a call for all of us to embrace our own lives as fully as possible.

Chris Clearfield On Why Systems Fail: From Oil Spills To Overcooked Holiday Meals + The Simple Solutions You Can Employ, Whether You Are Managing A Team Or Your Family’s Morning Routine

It all began when derivatives trader and commercially licensed airline pilot, Chris Clearfield, started seeing parallels between the financial crisis and aviation accidents all throughout his career.  In 2010, when the Deepwater Horizon Rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, the idea for his book, Meltdown, was sparked. Since then Chris has been researching and comparing major catastrophes around the world. Meltdown offers a groundbreaking take on how complexity causes failure in all kinds of modern systems — from social media to air travel—this practical and entertaining book reveals how we can prevent meltdowns in business and life.

Chris Clearfield is the Co-Author (with Andras Tilcsik) of Meltdown: What Plane Crashes, Oil Spills, and Dumb Business Decisions Can Teach us About How To Succeed at Work and Home. This book is all about why our systems fail and what we can do about it.  It’s definitely a business book however, you can absolutely apply the principles to family, fitness, training and life.

Chris was in town a few months ago, visiting from Seattle. We went for a run then recorded the podcast with today’s special co-host, Lori Mazor.  You may know Lori from way back when, episode one. She is my partner in life and racing. Lori connected everyone for the podcast and is a huge fan of the book and has direct experience using some of the principles within.

In the book, Chris and Andras weave together cutting edge social science with riveting stories that take us from the front lines of the Volkswagon scandal to backstage at the Oscars, and from deep beneath the Gulf of Mexico to the top of Mount Everest. They explain how the increasing complexities of our systems create conditions ripe for failure and why our brains can’t keep up. Chris and Andras highlight the paradox of progress: while modern systems have given us new capabilities, they’ve become vulnerable to surprising meltdowns—and even corruption and misconduct.

Chris shares many of these stories and examples on today’s episode but we also explore his philosophy thru the lens of triathlon and family. Meltdown by Chris Clearfield and András Tilcsik is now available in paperback and of course, as an audiobook, which I downloaded and listened to on Audible

FueledByMOTM: How I Train For Triathlon + 3 Easy Strategies To Get Your Workouts Done

Getting to the gym, a spin class or outdoors for your long run can be a challenge with a busy work, family and social schedule. As a triathlete, I know this well.  FueledByMOTM is a new Marni on The Move weekly segment offering tips, advice, and answers to listener questions.  On this premiere episode, I share my strategies for fitting my workouts into my busy schedule, stay motivated during training, and set goals to achieve success.  Many of you have been asking me how I find the time to train for triathlon and how I stay inspired in my training and workout routine. This isn’t a new question, as my friends and family have asked me for decades!  While this segment is focused on triathlon, these tips and advice apply to any sports or fitness routine. Before I trained for triathlon, I was a runner, yoga practitioner, and fitness class junkie. The only way I ever got to the gym or studio is by approaching training the same way I approach running my business. Whether I am spearheading initiatives within my own company, The Salup Group, building a brand strategy, communications and content campaign for a client, or producing events and FIT+LOVE’s annual fitness festival, I set achievable goals, build a team, map out a plan of action, build it into my schedule and get it done.

FueledByMOTM is my new weekly podcast segment and Marni on the Move series offering easy-to-follow, actionable, tips, advice and answers to listener questions on topics we cover in depth on Marni on the Move from career, fitness, beauty, sports, wellness and more.  Either myself or one of my 60 plus podcast guests will be sharing, commenting and answering listener questions in each 20 minute or less epiode. Daphnie Yang, Creator of HIIT IT! On Having A Positive Mindset, Running, and Fitness

Are you ready to feel empowered, inspired, motivated?  Today’s guest is all about making you feel good, bringing you joy, and powering you with the strength and confidence you need to live your best life!

From her popular fitness class, HIIT IT!, and her Power Hour networking events to her inspiring Instagram feed @Definedbydaphnie, and her podcast Just One More!, you are definitely going to love this conversation with fitness entrepreneur, innovator, and founder, Daphnie Yang.

Daphnie turned her love of dance, passion for running, talent for performing and experience in personal training into a life and career she loves with the launch of her wildly popular fitness class, HIIT IT!, which burst onto the fitness scene in October 2013. What began as a group workout with a few clients in Central Park has grown into the ultimate high intensity interval training workout.

On today’s episode we talk about how running transformed her life, where her journey with dance and fitness began, the narrative she created that almost prevented her from building her brand, having a positive mindset, and of course her sweat-drenching, fun-infused workout, HIIT IT! The one hour, 800 calorie burning workout she created that blasts body fat, torches calories, sculpts lean muscle mass, strengthens the core, skyrockets the metabolism and improves cardiovascular endurance.

Empowered with a BFA in Dance from NYU in 2007, multiple International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) Certifications in Personal Training, Pre and Post Natal Training, Marathon Coaching and Nutrition Counseling, Daphnie has motivated hundreds of people to reduce body fat, sculpt lean muscle mass, and run marathons, but most importantly, she has helped countless people achieve balance and wellness in their day to day lives. HIIT IT! classes are taught at Athleta Flatiron and Primary in NYC. Daphnie currently trains clients six days a week at her gym space in downtown Manhattan or on-site at clients homes and corporate offices.  To learn more, head over to her website, www.daphnieyang.com or follow her on social @definedbydaphnie, @powerhournyc, @hiititnyc or @justonemorepod.

Denise Lee, CEO + Founder, Alala, On Fashion, Fitness and Female Empowerment

Denise Lee always knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur. Growing up in Hong Kong, she moved to NYC to go to NYU Stern and pursue her dreams. But it wasn’t until she started training for her first triathlon in 2012 that she had her “aha” moment. As an avid athlete, she couldn’t find any activewear brand that offered the effortless cool styles of the contemporary designers she loved. Denise found the market lacking in a sense of creativity. Flash forward to 2014, she launched Alala. Today the brand is one of the leading modern activewear brands, providing women with sophisticated style, designs and silhouettes that are chic, comfortable, and workout ready!

On today’s episode, Denise and I sync up about where Alala began, her personal and brand mission, Alala’s very cool and forward thinking design collaborations and partnerships, and the workouts that fuel her for success.

Alala was one of the premier brands on the athleisure landscape catering to the studio going, class loving fitness crowd while appealing to women who wanted comfortable stylish active wear to wear to the office or lounge at home, five years later they continue to innovate. Alala is now carried in over 100 major retailers including Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus, and it has been seen on celebs Ashley Grahm, Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Watts, and Jessica Alba. But these celebrities are not the only stars wearing Alala, it’s the strong and inspiring women around the country that really shine for Alala and Denise Lee!

Have a listen and get ready to be inspired…

George Tenedios, CEO + Co-Founder, Fresh&Co, On Pioneering A Fresh, Local, and Seasonal Approach To Fast Casual, The Restaurant Business, and Long Island’s North Fork

The restaurant business is in his DNA! Born and raised in New Jersey, spending summers on Long Island’s North Fork and visiting relatives in Greece, today’s guest, George Tenedios,  CEO + Co-Founder of Fresh&Co, was born into a family of  restauranteurs. From the young age of 8, George Tenedios was accompanying his father to work on weekends. As a teenager, he began working with his father at Café Metro, the family’s famous NYC fast casual restaurant founded in 1984 with five locations today. In 2007, after a trip to the west coast. The restaurant officially opened in 2010 with one location and has grown to 19 locations in NYC over the past 8 years. They recently launched a Franchise Division and are partnering to develop locations in Westchester and Southern Florida, and they have a 36 acre farm on the North Fork of Long Island.

Fresh&Co offers chef inspired recipes, locally sourced ingredients and seasonal menus that offer a terrific array of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free items. You will also discover some of Fresh&Co’s delicious menu items from their Impossible Foods Plant Based Meatballs to Paninis, Grain Bowls, Market Table hot foods, and snacks.

On todays’ episode Marni sync’s up with George about his roots in the family business, how he has innovated and grown the company, his modern perspective and healthy approach to fast casual by partnering closely with the local community and working with local farmers to source seasonal, fresh ingredients and of course the athletic routines and workouts that fuel George for success!

In 2010, former Stanford University swim team co-captains, All-American swimmers Rob Canales and Kurt Spenser decided it would be a great idea to do an Ironman 70.3 in Austin as a fun way to reconnect and get back in shape after nearly a decade had gone by from their days of competitive swimming. On this episode, ROKA CMO + Co-Founder, Kurt Spenser, shares the story of how his triathlon experience and the challenges on the course led to the innovation and design of the brands globally renowned wetsuits and launch of ROKA in 2013.

Arshad Bahl, CEO + Founder Amrita: On Turning Tragedy Into Triumph

Arshad Bahl is the Founder + CEO of Amrita Foods,  the protein and energy bars that fuel my training and everyday life! His path to entrepreneurship was organic, literally and figuratively, and incredibly inspiring. He spent the first part of his career working in  corporate consulting and marketing, but when his son was diagnosed with autism and severe gastrointestinal issues at the age of two, his life and career were changed forvever. Arshad and his wife did a ton of research and immediately started their son on an aggressive gluten-free and dairy-free nutrition program. The nutritional changes helped heal his gastrointestinal issues, which allowed for better absorption of nutrition, which in turn made it easier for him to focus on other necessary therapies. Within three years, their son was in a mainstream classroom and was doing well both academically and socially.

After his son’s nutritional changes and gastrointestinal recovery, Arshad became convinced that plant-based nutrition was the right approach for managing inflammation. The significance of reducing one’s allergen load (such as consumption of gluten, dairy, nuts, soy, oils, preservatives, and chemical-containing non-organic foods) to help the body recover from daily stresses became apparent. Arshad became dedicated to developing snacks free of these damaging ingredients. In 2012, Amrita was officially launched.  What began as a few pop-ups starting at farmers markets got picked up by Whole Foods and today is in over 1000 doors nationwide.

Arshad is  an incredibly savvy founder and entrepreneur with a seriously awesome product. The protein and energy bars are delicious and packed with superfoods and healthy ingredients like Quinoa, Chia Seeds Dates Coconut Oil Sea Salt Maple Syrop, Cranberries, blueberries and more. They are dairy-free, gluten free, and vegan .

On today’s episode, Arshad and Marni talk about where his entrepreneurial journey began, food as medicine, healthy fueling for athletics and life, and he shares some great career and business insight and wisdom on building a brand, direct to consumers sales, influencer marketing and more.
