Chris Clearfield On Why Systems Fail: From Oil Spills To Overcooked Holiday Meals + The Simple Solutions You Can Employ, Whether You Are Managing A Team Or Your Family’s Morning Routine

It all began when derivatives trader and commercially licensed airline pilot, Chris Clearfield, started seeing parallels between the financial crisis and aviation accidents all throughout his career.  In 2010, when the Deepwater Horizon Rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, the idea for his book, Meltdown, was sparked. Since then Chris has been researching and comparing major catastrophes around the world. Meltdown offers a groundbreaking take on how complexity causes failure in all kinds of modern systems — from social media to air travel—this practical and entertaining book reveals how we can prevent meltdowns in business and life.

Chris Clearfield is the Co-Author (with Andras Tilcsik) of Meltdown: What Plane Crashes, Oil Spills, and Dumb Business Decisions Can Teach us About How To Succeed at Work and Home. This book is all about why our systems fail and what we can do about it.  It’s definitely a business book however, you can absolutely apply the principles to family, fitness, training and life.

Chris was in town a few months ago, visiting from Seattle. We went for a run then recorded the podcast with today’s special co-host, Lori Mazor.  You may know Lori from way back when, episode one. She is my partner in life and racing. Lori connected everyone for the podcast and is a huge fan of the book and has direct experience using some of the principles within.

In the book, Chris and Andras weave together cutting edge social science with riveting stories that take us from the front lines of the Volkswagon scandal to backstage at the Oscars, and from deep beneath the Gulf of Mexico to the top of Mount Everest. They explain how the increasing complexities of our systems create conditions ripe for failure and why our brains can’t keep up. Chris and Andras highlight the paradox of progress: while modern systems have given us new capabilities, they’ve become vulnerable to surprising meltdowns—and even corruption and misconduct.

Chris shares many of these stories and examples on today’s episode but we also explore his philosophy thru the lens of triathlon and family. Meltdown by Chris Clearfield and András Tilcsik is now available in paperback and of course, as an audiobook, which I downloaded and listened to on Audible

FueledByMOTM: How I Train For Triathlon + 3 Easy Strategies To Get Your Workouts Done

Getting to the gym, a spin class or outdoors for your long run can be a challenge with a busy work, family and social schedule. As a triathlete, I know this well.  FueledByMOTM is a new Marni on The Move weekly segment offering tips, advice, and answers to listener questions.  On this premiere episode, I share my strategies for fitting my workouts into my busy schedule, stay motivated during training, and set goals to achieve success.  Many of you have been asking me how I find the time to train for triathlon and how I stay inspired in my training and workout routine. This isn’t a new question, as my friends and family have asked me for decades!  While this segment is focused on triathlon, these tips and advice apply to any sports or fitness routine. Before I trained for triathlon, I was a runner, yoga practitioner, and fitness class junkie. The only way I ever got to the gym or studio is by approaching training the same way I approach running my business. Whether I am spearheading initiatives within my own company, The Salup Group, building a brand strategy, communications and content campaign for a client, or producing events and FIT+LOVE’s annual fitness festival, I set achievable goals, build a team, map out a plan of action, build it into my schedule and get it done.

FueledByMOTM is my new weekly podcast segment and Marni on the Move series offering easy-to-follow, actionable, tips, advice and answers to listener questions on topics we cover in depth on Marni on the Move from career, fitness, beauty, sports, wellness and more.  Either myself or one of my 60 plus podcast guests will be sharing, commenting and answering listener questions in each 20 minute or less epiode. George Tenedios, CEO + Co-Founder, Fresh&Co, On Pioneering A Fresh, Local, and Seasonal Approach To Fast Casual, The Restaurant Business, and Long Island’s North Fork

The restaurant business is in his DNA! Born and raised in New Jersey, spending summers on Long Island’s North Fork and visiting relatives in Greece, today’s guest, George Tenedios,  CEO + Co-Founder of Fresh&Co, was born into a family of  restauranteurs. From the young age of 8, George Tenedios was accompanying his father to work on weekends. As a teenager, he began working with his father at Café Metro, the family’s famous NYC fast casual restaurant founded in 1984 with five locations today. In 2007, after a trip to the west coast. George returned inspired by the California food scene and culture and recognized a need in NYC for healthy fast casual cuisine.  The idea to offer a new healthier spin and fresh perspective on the already successful fast casual business model was organic and the seed for Fresh&Co was planted. The restaurant officially opened in 2010 with one location and has grown to 19 locations in NYC over the past 8 years. They recently launched a Franchise Division and are partnering to develop locations in Westchester and Southern Florida, and they have a 36 acre farm on the North Fork of Long Island.

Fresh&Co offers chef inspired recipes, locally sourced ingredients and seasonal menus that offer a terrific array of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free items. You will also discover some of Fresh&Co’s delicious menu items from their Impossible Foods Plant Based Meatballs to Paninis, Grain Bowls, Market Table hot foods, and snacks.

On todays’ episode Marni sync’s up with George about his roots in the family business, how he has innovated and grown the company, his modern perspective and healthy approach to fast casual by partnering closely with the local community and working with local farmers to source seasonal, fresh ingredients and of course the athletic routines and workouts that fuel George for success!

LIVE from NYC: How To Adopt An Athletic Mindset For Life, Career, + Training with Andia Winslow, Andrew Kalley, Louis Sagar, and Murray Hidary

Today’s episode is all about mindset and intentions across athleticism, career, fitness, and wellness.  You will hear from former podcast guests (on new topics) including top professional and elite athletes, Andia Winslow and Andrew Kalley, and entreprenurs and founders Murray Hidary and Louis Sagar and learn how they  leveraged thier athletic mindset to empower them with the perseverence, focus, and dedication to succeed in their career, the strenth and flexibility to power through severe life illnesses and overcome family loss.  From triathlon, golf and running to CBD, music, and meditation you will be inspired and motivated to get started on your next athletic or entreprenurial endeavor.

This was the first Marni on the Move LIVE panel which took place at world renowned athletic complex and NYC gym, Chelsea Piers Fitness.Panel guests include:Professional Athlete-Golfer and Runner, Andia Winslow, who has been building her career as a successful on-air personality and voice over talent over the past several years, Andrew Kalley, an winning Elite Athlete, triathlon coach and personal trainer at Chelsea Piers Fitness with his own portfolio of clients at Kalley Fitness, Louis Sager, the CEO of The Alchemist’s Kitchen , and Murray Hidary, piianist, entrepreneur, creator of MindTravel, a musical meditation and experience.

It truly was a magical evening. We were on the deck outside, overlooking the Hudson. The event began with the panel, where listeners got to experience first-hand,, what it was like to be part of the podcast with digital wireless headsets almost as if they were in the room where it happens, thanks to Murray Hidary of MindTravel. Following the panel, Chelsea Piers Fitness talented and popular yoga teacher, Danielle Prager led a vinyasa style yoga class to the music of MindTravel and Murray continued to play trugh savasana into the night.

While all of this sounds wonderful and amazing, the episode audio is a little rough at first. Like a true entrepreneur, I had a vision and took a big risk, my first time recording a live event at this venue and really set the barre high. We were outside, recording digitally, no wires, with some technical interference and signals and occasional helicopters in the background.  My audio engineers are terrific. But it’s not the same as being in the studio so I wanted to prepare you for a few glitches here and there. However, it’s a really inspiring and empowering conversation and can maybe plant some seeds for you as we move into the New Year!

People/Things We Mention

Dylan Lauren, Founder and CEO of Dylan’s Candy Bar On Imagination, Innovation, and Inspiration

Nearly two decades ago my  next guest pioneered creating the world’s largest candy store, confectionery emporium and lifestyle brand, Dylan’s Candy Bar. Dylan Lauren merged her love of art, fashion and pop culture with candy and has innovated the way we see and experience candy today. Her story is empowering and inspiring as she pursued her lifelong dream to do what she loves. She transformed her creative vision into a reality and continues to innovate every day.

If you haven’t already been, Dylan’s Candy Bar transports you to a modern day version of Willy Wonka’s factory from the moment you enter with its pop art installations—such as the iconic oversized lollipop tree, candy cane columns, dripping chocolate shelves, kaleidoscopic candy wallpaper and candy-embedded staircases— even I can’t resist.

In addition to thousands of edible treats and activities, there are also candy-inspired lifestyle products. From stationery to technology, toys, jewelry to handbags, scented body lotions to sweaters. There are Ice Cream & Dessert Parlor, Candy Cocktail Bar and Party Rooms offering a wide variety of themed events for all ages

Since its inception and flagship opening in New York City, Dylan’s Candy Bar has expanded to US locations such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and East Hampton. Also in luxury boutiques, department stores, and premium hotels nationally and internationally. Dylan’s Candy Bar plans to continue expanding worldwide.

Dylan’s love of candy paralleled by her passion to help animals of all kinds.  She launched Dylan’s Candy Barn, a platform with the mission is to help every animal lead a happy life and find a home-sweet-home by hosting adoption events, granting funds to rescue organizations, and creating awareness campaigns.

And last but not least, ever since I have known Dylan, which is probably also nearly two decades, she has been super athletic, into fitness and training and followed an incredibly healthy diet mixed with candy, of course!

Fueled by exercise, fitness, and her love of candy, Dylan is all about balance and always has been.

On this episode of Marni on the Move, Dylan and Marni met up at  her newly designed office to reconnect and sync up about everything from our shared love of animals, being a founder and  entrepreneur and the innovative Dylan’s Candy Bar, her current fitness “go-to” and her adorable children Cooper Blue and Kingsley Rainbow.
