192. Giro, Apparel Product Manager, Margaux Elliott Talks Cycling, Sustainabilty in Apparel, and Innnovation

When today’s guest decided to conjure up and embark upon a fun cycling challenge, she set the bar pretty high, one million feet high to be exact. Today on the podcast I sync up with Margaux Elliott, the first woman ever to vertically ascend one million feet of terrain on a mountain bike, over a one year period. She also has a pretty cool job at world renowned cycling brand, Giro as the Apparel Product Manager where she is developing sustainable apparel with the launch of the Giro Renew Collection and beyond.

On this episode Margaux and I sync up about Giro’s sustainability strategy, how the brand is leading the way for cycling apparel company’s around the globe  using fabrics made from recycled materials, setting the tone for a long term goal to bring sustainability to all of Giro’s apparel.  Margaux’s shares how working at Giro was her dream job, her strategy to landing it and how she became one of the leading figures in promoting environmentalism in cycling and we talk about her goals for Giro in the near future.

When she’s not busy working on cycling apparel, she’s out on her bike. And in 2020, she set out and complete an epic challenge, climbing one million feet, in under 52 weeks, with 25 hours of weekly riding. We do a deep dive into the genesis of this concept, where her jouney into cycling began, the strategy and planning that went into the challenge, her favorite gear, opportunities and obstacles along the way (hint: it involved lots of brake pads, grip tape, snickers, and a few Mountain Lions).

183. Andrew “Bernie” Bernstein Talks Cycling, Safe Driving, & His Life Changing Accident

On July 20, 2019 Elite Cyclist and Velo Racer Andrew “Bernie” Bernstein was riding home from his local velodrome, when he was assaulted by a driver and left for dead in a ditch on the side of the road.  Thankfully he survived. Now he lives with an incomplete spinal cord injury and paraplegia. Today, through adaptation and hard work he is back on the bike in all new way.  I caught up with Bernie a few weeks ago, just before he purchased his new e-bike, a Specialized Turbo Creo, and I am excited to share, on July 11, 2021, he went out on his first long ride on his fave road.

During our conversation, Bernie goes into detail about his life-changing accident and his recovery process including his inspiring mindset and amazing physical therapy team and routine. He shares with me the incredible mental strength needed to overcome such a tremendous obstacle and his current journey back to cycling. Bernie dials me in to where his passion for cycling began and how he got into racing.

We talk about his career in media from journalism to PR and Paid Media, where he has worked in and around the outdoor and bike industries since 2006 and is currently Senior Account Director in Charge of Paid Media at globally renowned agency, TRUE Communications. He has been published in Men’s Health and Outside magazine, and he strives to use his platform to talk about his journey to overcome his injury, as well as speak about the importance of safe and responsible driving, which we talk about on the pod. We also do a deep dive into ablelism, a topic Bernie is passionate about, and his mission to empower people with the education on how to treat those with disabilities.

Bernie is an ultra-inspiring person and I am sure you will find this conversation very eye-opening and motivating. I hope it provides some insight into how we can keep each other safe on the move.

He is also a good friend and my cycling buddy!  New to the world of endurance sports and cycling, Andrew has been training for his first Century on July 29th, Bike4Chai, benefiting the children and families of Chai Lifeline, which supports more than two-dozen essential programs for more than 5,900 children and families confronting pediatric illness, crisis, and loss. He has raised nearly 9K so far.

In the spirit of adventure, I could not resist the opportunity to log some extra miles as I train for my 70.3 distance triathlons this summer, so I am doing most of the long rides with him this summer. We spend hours on the bike talking about training, getting stronger, faster, nutrition, hydration, health, fitness levels, and lunch stops.

Prior to launching his own business, Andrew spent a decade on Wall Street working as an investment banker before transitioning his career toward opening his own management firm. Most recently, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Andrew adopted a brand-new exercise routine, cycling, which, of course, is how we met.

On this episode, I sync up with Andrew about entrepreneurship and what inspired him to launch Terrier Capital Management. Andrew gives me his top business advice and talks about navigating his company through the COVID-19 pandemic. Of course, I ask Andrew all about how he discovered cycling, and we reminisce on some of our most memorable rides together. It wouldn’t be a true Marni on the Move episode without me geeking out on cycling gear and nutrition. I hope my conversation with Andrew inspires you to dust off that bike in the back of the garage and hit the pavement or the gravel, ride on!

Steve Smith is the Global Brand Manager at Castelli, one of the world’s leading cycling apparel brands and yes, one of my favorites! On this episode of Marni on the Move, Steve and I talk all things cycling from the brands historical roots and influence in the cycling world, tracing all the way back to 19th century Italy to its game-changing performance cycling apparel including aerodynamics, weather protection, comfort and 2021 summer styles.

We discuss how Castelli has revolutionized design and functionality in performance cycling jerseys, jackets, shorts and kits, from introducing LYCRA® to the sport in 1977 and reinventing the bib short to designing its world famous Gabba race jersey, and translating this functionality and high tech design into clothing for everyday recreational cyclists and triathletes. Steve sheds light on the innovation process Castelli implements to remain ahead of the curve when it comes to technology and design for the pros and beyond. He offers invaluable tips on dressing for cycling success for all weather and seasons, how to layer for long rides, and how to dress like a pro with great style.

Steve chats about his personal love of cycling, his favorite places to ride, the career path that led him to move to Italy for his current role at Castelli, where he lives, works and rides in Bassano del Grappa. We talk about the training and rides that fuel Steve for success, some key lessons he has learned from cycling, and what’s on his bucket list for 2021

149. Nelson Gutierrez, Founder, Strictly Bicycles On Cycling, Entrepreneurship & Pursuing Your Passion

When Strictly Bicycles founder, Nelson Gutierrez opened his store in 1994, he dreamed of not only sharing his sport with the world but creating a community of passionate cyclists looking for a welcoming place to socialize, refuel, and purchase the highest quality gear to set them up for success. And that’s exactly what he did—just ask any cyclist where their go-to stop is on a long ride outside NYC. The answer? Strictly Bicycles is the place to be.

On today’s episode, Nelson shares how he fell in love with cycling as a way to expand his horizons and explore new places while growing up in the inner city. He talks about working at a bike shop at the age of 19, and how his managerial position there fueled his entrepreneurial drive and led him to open his own bike shop, Strictly Bicycles.

We discuss how Nelson pivoted his business during the COVID-19 pandemic toward a more virtual experience, and how he kept his customers and employees safe, while remaining open and continuing to produce the Strictly Bicycles experience outside and socially-distanced.

Nelson also offers his sage cycling wisdom, tips and advice on purchasing and maintaining bikes for both first-time and leveling up for seasoned cyclists, as well as how to continue training indoors.  I also sync up with Nelson on how cycling fuels him for entrepreneurship and vice versa. Hint—he’s all about having passion.

46. Arshad Bahl, CEO + Founder Amrita: On Turning Tragedy Into Triumph

Arshad Bahl is the Founder + CEO of Amrita Foods,  the protein and energy bars that fuel my training and everyday life! His path to entrepreneurship was organic, literally and figuratively, and incredibly inspiring. He spent the first part of his career working in  corporate consulting and marketing, but when his son was diagnosed with autism and severe gastrointestinal issues at the age of two, his life and career were changed forvever. Arshad and his wife did a ton of research and immediately started their son on an aggressive gluten-free and dairy-free nutrition program. The nutritional changes helped heal his gastrointestinal issues, which allowed for better absorption of nutrition, which in turn made it easier for him to focus on other necessary therapies. Within three years, their son was in a mainstream classroom and was doing well both academically and socially.

After his son’s nutritional changes and gastrointestinal recovery, Arshad became convinced that plant-based nutrition was the right approach for managing inflammation. The significance of reducing one’s allergen load (such as consumption of gluten, dairy, nuts, soy, oils, preservatives, and chemical-containing non-organic foods) to help the body recover from daily stresses became apparent. Arshad became dedicated to developing snacks free of these damaging ingredients. In 2012, Amrita was officially launched.  What began as a few pop-ups starting at farmers markets got picked up by Whole Foods and today is in over 1000 doors nationwide.

Arshad is  an incredibly savvy founder and entrepreneur with a seriously awesome product. The protein and energy bars are delicious and packed with superfoods and healthy ingredients like Quinoa, Chia Seeds Dates Coconut Oil Sea Salt Maple Syrop, Cranberries, blueberries and more. They are dairy-free, gluten free, and vegan .

On today’s episode, Arshad and Marni talk about where his entrepreneurial journey began, food as medicine, healthy fueling for athletics and life, and he shares some great career and business insight and wisdom on building a brand, direct to consumers sales, influencer marketing and more.
