FueledByMOTM: How I Train For Triathlon + 3 Easy Strategies To Get Your Workouts Done

Getting to the gym, a spin class or outdoors for your long run can be a challenge with a busy work, family and social schedule. As a triathlete, I know this well.  FueledByMOTM is a new Marni on The Move weekly segment offering tips, advice, and answers to listener questions.  On this premiere episode, I share my strategies for fitting my workouts into my busy schedule, stay motivated during training, and set goals to achieve success.  Many of you have been asking me how I find the time to train for triathlon and how I stay inspired in my training and workout routine. This isn’t a new question, as my friends and family have asked me for decades!  While this segment is focused on triathlon, these tips and advice apply to any sports or fitness routine. Before I trained for triathlon, I was a runner, yoga practitioner, and fitness class junkie. The only way I ever got to the gym or studio is by approaching training the same way I approach running my business. Whether I am spearheading initiatives within my own company, The Salup Group, building a brand strategy, communications and content campaign for a client, or producing events and FIT+LOVE’s annual fitness festival, I set achievable goals, build a team, map out a plan of action, build it into my schedule and get it done.

FueledByMOTM is my new weekly podcast segment and Marni on the Move series offering easy-to-follow, actionable, tips, advice and answers to listener questions on topics we cover in depth on Marni on the Move from career, fitness, beauty, sports, wellness and more.  Either myself or one of my 60 plus podcast guests will be sharing, commenting and answering listener questions in each 20 minute or less epiode. Denise Lee, CEO + Founder, Alala, On Fashion, Fitness and Female Empowerment

Denise Lee always knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur. Growing up in Hong Kong, she moved to NYC to go to NYU Stern and pursue her dreams. But it wasn’t until she started training for her first triathlon in 2012 that she had her “aha” moment. As an avid athlete, she couldn’t find any activewear brand that offered the effortless cool styles of the contemporary designers she loved. Denise found the market lacking in a sense of creativity. Flash forward to 2014, she launched Alala. Today the brand is one of the leading modern activewear brands, providing women with sophisticated style, designs and silhouettes that are chic, comfortable, and workout ready!

On today’s episode, Denise and I sync up about where Alala began, her personal and brand mission, Alala’s very cool and forward thinking design collaborations and partnerships, and the workouts that fuel her for success.

Alala was one of the premier brands on the athleisure landscape catering to the studio going, class loving fitness crowd while appealing to women who wanted comfortable stylish active wear to wear to the office or lounge at home, five years later they continue to innovate. Alala is now carried in over 100 major retailers including Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus, and it has been seen on celebs Ashley Grahm, Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Watts, and Jessica Alba. Kurt Spenser, CMO + Co-Founder, ROKA, On The World’s Fastest Wetsuit, Triathlon + The Future of Athletic Performance Eyewear

In 2010, former Stanford University swim team co-captains, All-American swimmers Rob Canales and Kurt Spenser decided it would be a great idea to do an Ironman 70.3 in Austin as a fun way to reconnect and get back in shape after nearly a decade had gone by from their days of competitive swimming. This race was the launching point for how the world’s fastest wetsuit was created and marked the beginning of the game-changing athletic performance brand, ROKA.

On this episode, ROKA CMO + Co-Founder, Kurt Spenser, shares the story of how his triathlon experience and the challenges on the course led to the innovation and design of the brands globally renowned wetsuits and launch of ROKA in 2013.

Kurt and Marni sync up about: the initial prototype wetsuit that was created in Co-Founder, Rob Canales garage; pro-triathlete, Jesse Thomas’s winning results that put the wetsuit on the triathlon radar; the brands expansion to offer award winning performance sunglasses, a new collection of prescription eyewear, The Austin Collection, goggles, and gear all with paradigm shifting design; and the workout routine that is currently fueling Kurt for success!

Since the brands inception, ROKA athletes have won over a dozen world titles and have been instrumental in the design and development of an unprecedented collection of patented and award-winning products. In 2016, ROKA was proud to send 18 athletes to the Rio Olympics, taking home Gold and Bronze.  In PyeongChang, ROKA continued the tradition, taking home Olympic Gold and Bronze in their Advanced Performance eyewear.  Including podcast guest and Olympic Gold Medalist, triathlete and runner, Gwen Jorgensen. ROKA’s mission is to unlock human potential. To equip, empower, inspire and ignite. ROKA serves those who seek to redefine the standard, to push themselves to the limit – whatever and wherever that may be. ROKA products are available worldwide and through select retailers.  And they have a new pop-up in Austin, if you live nearby!

ROKA is offering 20% off with the exception of their optical collection. Use the code MARNI (not case sensitive) on their website in the US Store only, no other discounts apply, at www.roka.com.

LIVE from NYC: How To Adopt An Athletic Mindset For Life, Career, + Training with Andia Winslow, Andrew Kalley, Louis Sagar, and Murray Hidary

Today’s episode is all about mindset and intentions across athleticism, career, fitness, and wellness.  You will hear from former podcast guests (on new topics) including top professional and elite athletes, Andia Winslow and Andrew Kalley, and entreprenurs and founders Murray Hidary and Louis Sagar and learn how they  leveraged thier athletic mindset to empower them with the perseverence, focus, and dedication to succeed in their career, the strenth and flexibility to power through severe life illnesses and overcome family loss.  From triathlon, golf and running to CBD, music, and meditation you will be inspired and motivated to get started on your next athletic or entreprenurial endeavor.

This was the first Marni on the Move LIVE panel which took place at world renowned athletic complex and NYC gym, Chelsea Piers Fitness.Panel guests include:Professional Athlete-Golfer and Runner, Andia Winslow, who has been building her career as a successful on-air personality and voice over talent over the past several years, Andrew Kalley, an winning Elite Athlete, triathlon coach and personal trainer at Chelsea Piers Fitness with his own portfolio of clients at Kalley Fitness, Louis Sager, the CEO of The Alchemist’s Kitchen , and Murray Hidary, piianist, entrepreneur, creator of MindTravel, a musical meditation and experience.

It truly was a magical evening. We were on the deck outside, overlooking the Hudson. The event began with the panel, where listeners got to experience first-hand,, what it was like to be part of the podcast with digital wireless headsets almost as if they were in the room where it happens, thanks to Murray Hidary of MindTravel. Following the panel, Chelsea Piers Fitness talented and popular yoga teacher, Danielle Prager led a vinyasa style yoga class to the music of MindTravel and Murray continued to play trugh savasana into the night.

While all of this sounds wonderful and amazing, the episode audio is a little rough at first. Like a true entrepreneur, I had a vision and took a big risk, my first time recording a live event at this venue and really set the barre high. We were outside, recording digitally, no wires, with some technical interference and signals and occasional helicopters in the background.  My audio engineers are terrific. But it’s not the same as being in the studio so I wanted to prepare you for a few glitches here and there. However, it’s a really inspiring and empowering conversation and can maybe plant some seeds for you as we move into the New Year!

Train hard to race easy! That is Elite Athlete and USAT Level 2 Coach, Andrew Kalley’s philosophy when it comes to triathlon. And that’s exactly what he does.  Andrew Kalley has qualified 8x for the ITU World Championship to represent Team USA.  He has 12 Overall Wins, including the NYC Triathlon, Stamford Triathlon, South Beach Triathlon, and the Montauk Triathlon.  Even when faced with a life changing diagnosis that most people would have given up and put training on hold, Andrew’s athletic, winning mindset and inspiring clients kept him going through it all. In 2014 he was diagnosed with Colon Cancer, but his training went on! Even while undergoing chemo, he still qualified for Worlds in 2015 (and was nominated to raise the USA flag at the Opening Ceremony.

For the past 11 years, Andrew Kalley has been an elite athlete and triathlon coach for the most impressive tri team in the Northeast. Full Throttle Endurance based in New York City with over 100 members who have won the New York City Triathlon for 10 years since 2007, won the South Beach Triathlon every year since racing it beginning in 2007, and won the USAT National Team Championship 5x including in 2017. Andrew’s name is synonymous with the team.  He is also a personal trainer at my favorite gym and athletic playground, Chelsea Piers Fitness and recently launched his own national triathlon coaching and training company, Kalley Fitness.

Today’s episode is a “must download” for all our triathlete listeners but it’s also a very inspiring story about mindset and dedication, even if you aren’t an athlete! Andrew talks about what it means to “train hard” not just literally training but attitude, motivation and dedication. Marni and Andrew sync up about race planning, Zone 2 training (of course) what’s a conversation about triathlon without the famous ZONE 2 convo, right?  Marni and Andrew also sync up about setting race goals, key races, and what fuels him for success!
