When Pallavi Shah’s mother suggested she pursue a career in medicine, she listened! It was one of the best decisions she has made in her life.

Pallavi Shah currently practices at Orthlology in Chelsea, New York. Prior to practicing at Orthology, Pallavi successfully owned and grew Physical Therapy In Action, a highly rated PT practice based in Maryland. Throughout her 18 year Physical Therapy career she has worked with elite athletes, political figures and local communities across three countries and multiple states in US. She has expertise in Dry Needling, Kineseo Taping, Custom Orthotics, TMJ Rehab, Vestibular Rehab, Spinal Manipulation, Myofascial Release, Pre /Post Natal Rehab and Ergonomic Rehab. She has been featured on CNN and Fox. As a certified Ergonomic Assessment specialist she has helped companies like Coca Cola, India and their employees to identify and modify any job tasks that put them at risk of musculoskeletal injury.

114. Colleen M. Brough, PT, DPT, MS, Founder + Director Columbia RunLab On Running Mechanics, Injury Prevention, & Performance Enhancement

Colleen Brough, PT, DPT, MS is the Director and Founder of Columbia RunLab, a premier running performance lab offering a highly-specialized running analysis experience for Olympic, elite, competitive, and recreational teams and runners.  Columbia RunLab offers state-of-the-art, in-depth evaluation and education for runners who want to optimize their performance, help prevent and manage injuries.  Originally from the New York City area, Colleen is a lifelong athlete and avid runner and has  been an active member of New York Road Runners and Front Runners New York.

Dr. Brough is an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine at CUIMC in Columbia University’s Programs in Physical Therapy . She is an orthopedic specialist certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists with over 15 years of clinical and teaching experience.  She teaches Applied Physiology and lectures on Orthopedics in the Columbia University Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy.

On this episode, I sync up with Colleen about where her journey into physical therapy began, the pivotal moment that shaped her career, the path that led her to running, and the inspiration behind Columbia RunLab. We talk about her strategies for injury prevention and boosting run performance, her philosophy around rehabilitating runners while keeping them moving, the mechanical hallmarks of runners that are prone to injury, and do a deep dive into foot striking + ground contact angles, knee flexion and overstriding. She offers insight on DIY at home running analysis tactics that are easy to follow, how you can recognize your mileage and pace tipping point, discover the mechanical issues that may be driving your injury, and a few ideas on how you can  optimize your running performance.

Columbia RunLab prides itself on student development and community outreach as part of its program. They work with organizations that support restricted access, underserved and special-needs running groups throughout the community to provide this clinic experience free of charge. Students from the Columbia University Irving Medical Center Doctor of Physical Therapy Program are rigorously selected as part of an elective class for the opportunity to support Columbia RunLab. They are a faculty practice of the graduate Programs in Physical Therapy in the Department of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

109. Ashley Speights O’Neill On Resilience, Performance and Healing

Entrepreneur and Physical Therapist, Ashley Speights O’Neill, PT, DPT, PES is the Founder & Owner of The PHYT Collective.  She is renowned in the fitness industry, running world and among athletes around the nation for her expertise in orthopedic and sports physical therapy with a proven track record for healing. She is the PT of record for Soul Cycle DC and {Solidcore} DC.  Ashley has experience working with a range of sports injuries of varying levels from professional & collegiate athletes to pediatrics. She has special interests in injury prevention, chronic pain syndromes, competitive athletes, and the rehabilitation of the spine, shoulders, hips, & knees.

On today’s Marni on the Move episode Ashley and Marni talk about her path into physical therapy and entrepreneurship, pivoting her newly opened practice to Telemedicine and virtual healing, the importance of community and group fitness. Ashley also shares some tips and advice for fitness class goers and runners on a few key muscles we should all be strengthening for optimal movement, balance, and core.

Ashley Speights O’Neill is a Washington, DC native who has been practicing orthopedic & sports physical therapy since receiving her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Duke University in 2011. Prior to attending Duke, she received a B.S. Ed in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Medicine & a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Virginia in 2008. She also holds a Performance Enhancement Specialist Certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
